Economic Impact
The Port of Longview contributes to the local, regional and national economies by generating jobs, tax revenues to local and state governments, customs fees to the federal government and revenue to businesses engaged in handling, shipping and receiving cargo at the Port.
It is estimated that 13,200 jobs are related to marine cargo and vessel activities in the Longview area. Of the 13,200 jobs:
- 6,008 are generated directly by activities at the public and private marine facilities at the Port of Longview. The public facilities operated by the Port of Longview were responsible for 404 of these direct jobs.
- 4,205 are employed by providing goods and services to the 6,008 individuals directly involved with port activity. The public facilities generated 212 of these induced jobs.
- 202 indirect jobs are generated by the local purchases by firms providing marine services at the public and private marine terminals. Purchases by firms dependent upon the public facilities supported 105 of these indirect jobs.
- An additional 2,679 residents are employed by organizations that use the services provided by the Port. If the Port of Longview were not available to these organizations, they would suffer an economic penalty over the longer term.
The revenue, income and tax impacts of the Port have been estimated and it is concluded that:
- During 1996 the public and private marine terminals in Longview generated $148.4 million in direct operating revenue for organizations providing services at the Port. The activity at the Port of Longview owned and operated facilities generated $77.1 million of this revenue impact.
- $249.2 million was distributed as personal income to residents of the State of Washington. After considering the respending effect, this resulted in $492.5 million in personal income and consumption expenditures for Washington residents. The public facilities generated $30.8 million of this total personal income impact.
- Dry bulk cargoes generate the largest total revenue impact.
- Port activity at Longview in 1996 generated $56.9 million of state and local tax receipts, of which the public facilities generated $3.4 million.
